I started singing with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, the official chorus of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, in the summer of 1997. They have a pool of around 250 singers, and conductor John Oliver selects who he wants for which concerts. In the fall of 2007, I also joined the New World Chorale, led by Holly Krafka. The Longy Chamber Singers were led by the renowned Lorna Cooke deVaron. I did solos there in the Buxtehude 'Jesu Meine Freude', Britten 'Hymn to St. Cecelia', and the Holst arrangement of the English folk song 'Brigg Fair'. |

The Nashoba Valley Chorale performs in the Groton MA area, and was conducted for many years by Johanna Hill Simpson. While there, I did solos in the Britten 'Hymn to St. Cecelia', Rutter 'The Reluctant Dragon' and P. D. Q. Bach 'The Seasonings', among others. (That's me in the front row of this picture, just to the right of center.) |

Before that, I sang with the Back Bay Chorale for several years under Larry Hill and Beverly Taylor. High points with Back Bay were performances of the Bach 'St. Matthew Passion', Brahms 'Ein Deutsches Requiem', and the oratorio 'El Salvador: Requiem and Invocation' by Newell Hendricks. Another was doing a solo from the balcony of Symphony Hall in the Paul Winter Consort's 'Missa Gaia', during which I traded licks with Winter's soprano saxophone and a recording of a timber wolf! |

Mooncoin was a trio that did a lot of Celtic folk tunes, plus whatever else we found interesting. I played bass guitar, guitar and vocals, Paul Beck played mandolin/cittern/guitar/vocals and Tom Benson did fiddle and vocals. |

I had the opportunity to perform on two tribute albums to the English rock band Gentle Giant. Both albums can be purchased via the Web (or borrowed from me). Members of the Gentle Giant mailing list On Reflection decided to create and publish a tribute album. The album, called Giant Tracks, is a collection of songs individually performed and recorded by fans of the band. Violinist Tom Benson organized a group of us to record the song Just the Same, on which I sing and play acoustic guitar. Around the same time, the Italian progressive rock label Mellow Records was putting their own tribute album together, entitled Giant for a Life. We sent them a tape of Just the Same as an audition, which they liked. So we recorded In a Glass House for them. Mellow ended up putting both songs on the album! Both have gotten airplay on a few obscure college radio stations. |
For several years, I sang in a band called Metropolis, which did covers of progressive rock songs. We'd perform a few times a year, with our biggest gig being part of a "high-tech battle of the bands" at the 1993 LotusWorld convention in Boston. It was lots of fun, but it got difficult for everyone to find enough time to rehearse and learn new songs, so we called it quits in January 1997.

Our repertoire included a lot of Kansas material. So when the Kansas mailing list People of the South Wind decided to publish their tribute and asked for submissions, we sent in some tapes we had on hand. The album is also called People of the South Wind, and three of the ten songs on it are ours. There's a studio recording of Paradox that we made for a demo tape, and live performances of The Wall and Song for America. |
